Objectives

The module aims to introduce, evaluate and integrate the conceptual, empirical and practice-based knowledge bases of performance management and career development. As such, it highlights the relevance of core psychological theories and concepts. The module activities aim to explore how the contexts and constraints of contemporary organisations create tensions and challenges that shape the practical application of knowledge in these areas, and how these may be effectively navigated.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will be able to:

1. Explain and critically evaluate the quality and practical relevance of conceptual, empirical and practice-based literature in the areas of performance management and career development
2. Identify and critically evaluate the impacts of organisational contexts and practical constraints on the way performance management and career development are enacted in practice
3. Diagnose needs and problems related to performance management and career development systems and processes in organisations and generate new or revised approaches.

Skills outcomes
The module aims to develop student's abilities to:
1. Select and apply relevant theories and concepts to specific practical problems and activities involved in performance management and career development in the workplace. Hence, it develops decision-making and practical problem-solving skills.
2. Debate different perspectives on issues relating to performance management and career development in the workplace, and choose between alternatives.
3. Make connections between other areas of Work psychology studied on the programme and their roles in performance management and career development.



Syllabus

Indicative content for the study of performance management includes approaches to performance management; different ways of defining performance at both the organisational and individual levels; how to measure performance and collect the relevant data; and how to best evaluate performance and feed it back to employees to ensure a motivating approach.

Indicative content for the study of career development includes: how a career can mean different things to different people, career decisions, factors which influence career development, ways individuals can help themselves in developing their careers, and the role organisations play in developing the careers of employees.

This could include a variety of activities, such as reading, watching videos, answering questions, and assignment preparation.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Progress issues will be addressed informally during contact hours. Students can check their understanding of content by completing regular check-your-learning questions and by learning from the answers provided. Students can get feedback by engaging in the Discussion forum on Minerva and by asking questions in class. Students are welcome to meet with the module leader during office hours to gain feedback and discuss queries. Students will be given feedback on their application of key concepts in the seminars and will often be given further sources to read at home if they desire further feedback. Students will participate in a session where they will spend time planning their assignment answers. Here they will receive proactive feedback and have the opportunity to ask questions.
