Module summary

Students will choose a cardiovascular-related research, clinical or practice-based project from a list of proposals designed to increase their practical skills and subject specific knowledge in their chosen discipline. The student will become part of a research group where, under appropriate supervision, they will conduct and report on their own research. The course will support their learning and provide them with the skills necessary for cardiovascular orientated careers in research, industry or healthcare.

Objectives

Students will work with one of the established groups within Leeds institute of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine or the Faculty of Biological Sciences and experience cutting edge research and gain specialist knowledge in key areas of the role of the cardiovascular system in human disease.

The module is research focused and therefore students will learn through specific projects, workshops and tutorials. Assessment through a combination of written research reports, journal style review and oral/poster presentations will enable the development of key transferable skills.

Learning outcomes
1.Be able to carry out a literature search and write a journal style article (project specific) ready for publication

2. Be able to understand where their research fits within the cardiovascular field and critically evaluate the current research in order to identify important research questions (literature review, research report)

3. Formulate hypotheses and develop, implement and execute plans by which to evaluate these (30 week project, research report and workshop)

4. Become competent in practical research skills (30 week project, on demand skills training)

5. Assess and appraise the validity, strengths and weaknesses of their own work (workshop, research report)

6. Prepare a scientific report detailing the context of the study, the results, interpretation and directions for future work (workshop)

7. Generate presentations on the research for either scientific or lay audiences (oral communication/poster)

Skills outcomes
The project module in the MSc in Cardiovascular Health and Disease is designed to provide an introduction to practical research and to develop the following subject specific skills:

- Plan and manage time effectively

- Preparation, planning and execution of a research project.

- Subject / discipline practical research skills

- Critical analysis of own and others work

- Communication of proposals, outcomes and analysis in written and oral format.

Syllabus

The student will undertake a 600 hour research project that will be timetabled in accordance with the chosen core and optional modules.

The project will expose the student to a range of research skills and give a flavour of the breadth of skills that can be honed in academic research, especially in the cardiovascular field. The student will learn how to formulate a research plan, write a scientific report and present data to both peers and lay persons. Two compulsory custom designed workshops on academic writing and statistics will support the students on their chosen projects and specific skill training (e.g. laboratory skills) will be available in an on-demand manner.

The assessed components of this module are three original pieces of writing/presentation in the form of a literature review (publication ready); a scientific report; and an oral presentation for scientists/clinicians or a poster presentation to patients (student choice). The literature review will be formatively assessed at the end of Semester 1, where feedback from supervisors will be incorporated ready for publication standard submission at the end of Semester 2. Submission of project reports and presentations will be at the end of Semester 3. Projects are supervised by a member of University staff based in LICAMM or FBS, but in addition to the primary project supervisor, there is a larger team of students and staff with whom the student will have the opportunity to liaise and consult throughout their studies.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

The students will have the opportunity to submit the literature review at the beginning of semester 2 for peer-review feedback (formative assessment). Throughout the course the student will have guidance from a primary supervisor and the integrated team. Progression will be recorded in 7 supervisory meetings using written feedback on the supervisory forms shown in the handbooks and /or via the GRAD system.

The students will have the opportunity to submit the literature review at the beginning of semester 2 for peer-review feedback (formative assessment). For the summative assessed submission at the end of semester 2, the student will have further modified the review for submission to an appropriate journal for publication. There is no compensation between assessments as students need to meet all learning outcomes.
