Module summary

This module is designed to cater for the document writing requirements of a variety of professions. Document types will typically include press releases, web content and business reports and the use of technology will be emphasised.

Objectives

This module is designed to cater for the document writing requirements of a wide variety of professions. The various document types are categorised by their functions, for example 'writing for organisational management' and 'writing for the media'. A range of document types will be covered within each category and a theoretical background will also be provided.

Learning outcomes
1. Be familiar with a range of document types from a variety of professional contexts

2. identify relevant elements of document genres and apply these to producing written work

3. produce professional documents of various types to a professional standard

4. Use ICT to produce professional documents

Skills outcomes
By the end of this module students should:
- be familiar with a range of document types from a variety of professional contexts
- be able to analyse and evaluate professional documents produced by others
- produce professional documents of various types to a professional standard
- be able to work collaboratively using ICT to produce professional documents


Syllabus

The following areas will typically be covered:
- writing for organisational management
- writing for the media
- writing for the web
- writing for human resources
- writing for business

For each area a range of document types will be covered, such as press releases, web pages and business reports. The module will also include the use of technology as both a means of production and publication.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will be working on a portfolio of work throughout the module and will have the opportunity to discuss the issues related to each document type in class. Tutors will make regular progress checks on the portfolios.
