Module summary

Retour interpreting, or interpreting into a B language, is a major aspect of conference interpreting both on the private market and at international institutions. It has become and is continuing to become more widespread within the profession.This module will further develop the skills required for successful, professional retour interpreting. Students will be introduced to and develop the key skills for simultaneous interpreting into a B language. The simultaneous interpreting mode is most commonly employed on the private market and at international institutions and is a key mode for successful, professional interpreters.

Objectives

The main objectives of this module are to introduce the key practical and theoretical concepts and issues at play when interpreting into a B language; to aid student development in B language competence; to enable students to develop effective strategies in simultaneous interpreting into B. In order to achieve this, the module focuses on specific techniques, such as deverbalisation, note-taking and paraphrasing to support effective, clear and precise discourse delivery into a B language in simultaneous mode. It also develops the skills in cognitive processing and concentration of effort necessary for effective simultaneous interpreting into a B language. Through the module students also develop their understanding of the retour interpreting market and demands of the users of interpreting services.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the module, students should be able to:
• Effectively analyse, deverbalise, internalise the original speaker’s meaning;
• Effectively reconstruct and communicate the source speaker’s message and intentions in a clear and precise manner, using techniques such as paraphrasing appropriately;
• Communicate and present clearly and effectively in a B language;
• Deploy strategies for successful concentration of effort for successful simultaneous interpreting into a B language;
• Demonstrate understanding of and ability to use the strategies employed when working into or out of English as part of an A/B language pair.


Syllabus

During the first period of the second semester, students will develop their simultaneous interpreting skills and the module will focus on simultaneous interpreting into a B language with progressively more challenging source speeches: both in terms of technical content and structure and presentation.

In the second period of the semester, and during practicals held in the University’s interpreting facilities, intensive practice of simultaneous interpreting will be carried out. This will involve the use of authentic materials including speeches delivered by native speakers on a variety of topics and pre-recorded speeches, including those from a number of international organisations.
A range of exercises aimed at developing good analysis, anticipation and segmentation skills as well as target language reformulation and delivery will be integrated into the practicals to enable students to develop the skills and sub-skills required for simultaneous interpreting. Pedagogical materials produced by international organisations for training purposes may be used for self-study and in the practicals.

Additional virtual classes may be arranged in cooperation with partner universities and international institutions such as the European Commission depending on availability.

Private study

Specific guidance will be given to support and structure private study and group learning.

Students are expected to increase their exposure to professional language usage by following authentic speeches. They will also practice key skills such as analysing information, synthesising different points of views, and making coherent and logical speeches/presentations/summaries. They will be given guidelines for assessing their own performances and giving systematic and constructive feedback to peers.
