Module summary

The creative industries are a dynamic sector where traditional ideas of career trajectories might not apply. The module will provide a space for you to research creative occupations. You will develop a personal development plan, reflect on and articulate your learning and skills development, and what motivates you as you plan your future career.

Objectives

In this module you will research an occupation in the creative industries exploring contemporary issues that affect this kind of work, including topics such as how careers progress, and the importance of learning and skills development. You will also complete a personal development plan, encouraging you to critically reflect on your personal motivations and values, and potential issues affecting routes into work you find meaningful and rewarding.

1. Analyse how career trajectories in the global creative industries may develop in response to emerging opportunities and changing contexts
2. Engage with critical debates on skills and learning in creative occupations
3. Develop a personal development plan and critically reflect on its value
4. Explore the role of personal motivations and values and how they may affect creative careers

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Seminars will provide opportunities for students to receive feedback in small groups from peers and academic staff.
The personal development plan will provide an opportunity for students to explore their skills, motivations and values, and future development plan in a structured way. This will be partially completed in class with opportunity to discuss their personal plan with module tutors and peers.

The first assignment will give students the opportunity to explore a creative occupation, and discuss how it may be affected by contemporary issues affect work in the creative industries. Students will be encouraged to engage with how individual careers develop and the kinds of skills required. Resit will be an 800-word report. For Assignment 2 students will be asked to complete a personal development plan using a template such as PATH: A Personal and Professional Development Tool. They will be required to complete a critical reflective account that includes discussion of the role of personal motivations and values in shaping creative occupations, and the value of development plans in the context of issues affect work in the creative industries.
