Module summary

You need to register your interest in this module at the end of year 2 as places are limited. You will participate in a short placement in a work environment. This could be in a company, a charity or public sector organisation. You will need to find your own placement which will need approving by the module team. Support will be available from the EPS Employability Team. The placement will last for at least 30 hours. This may comprise of attending the work placement for a few hours a week over several weeks or for a block of one week, or any combination as agreed between the placement provider, the student and the module leader. The placement can take place at any time during the academic year before the end of the Easter break. The placements will not normally be paid. Key features are the preparation and planning for, and subsequent reflection and dissemination on the experience, to ensure that you derive maximum benefit from the placement.

The placements will not normally be paid.
The key aspects in ensuring that the student derives benefit from the placement are the preparation and reflection aspects.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will be able
1. Gain increased commercial/workplace awareness;
2. Be better able to self-evaluate, reflect and target set;
3. Be able to identify and articulate the skills required for employment;
4. Put their Physics learning into context and apply the skills that they have developed
5. Be better able to plan for their future.
6. Manage time and deliver work to deadlines.

Application of physics knowledge and skills from some of the year 1 and year 2 modules.

Private study

Preparation for the placement, travel requirements to and from the placement, reflecting on the placement experience after each session, writing the reflective report, preparing for the poster session and delivery of the poster session.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

The module leader will be in regular email contact with the students to monitor how the placements are going and will address any problems that may arise. The module assistant will have interim contact with the placement provider to check for any issues.
Students will need to provide information in writing about their intended work pattern before the end of semester 1 at the latest.
