Pre-requisite qualifications

This module has an independent application and enrolment system – you cannot enrol online.
Apply for this module through the Students into Schools scheme on MyCareer. There are 4 separate elements to the application:
1. Email the module leader to express your interest in the module
2. Complete the application form on MyCareer
3. Provide details of two referees
4. Begin the process of securing an enhanced DBS (child protection) check, by:
a. Registering on Security Watchdog
b. Sourcing the necessary documentation – proof of identity and address
c. Having your documents checked in person at the Careers Centre on campus*

All of this must be completed by 17.00 on 23rd June.

Please leave plenty of time to source the necessary documents for your DBS – Unfortunately we cannot accept late applications unless there are mitigating circumstances.

* If you are on a year abroad or placement year outside of Leeds and not able to attend in person before the 23rd, please indicate this on the application form and we will support you to make alternative arrangements.

Objectives

This module gives students the chance to understand and experience what it is like to teach physics. By undertaking a placement or teaching activities they can develop skills utilised in the teaching profession. And while not exclusively for students considering a career in teaching, it can help them decide, and advantage them in this career route.

Learning outcomes
Students will be able to demonstrate application, synthesis and critical evaluation of physics teaching material suitable for secondary school pupils through:

1. Providing a coherent view of activities undertaken, written in formal English with illustrations, figures and references to literature sources as necessary.
2. Writing a literature review of current issues within physics teaching
3. Delivering a presentation, with demonstration, to showcase a research topic of physics adapted for 6th form pupils, and answering related questions.
4. Manage time and deliver work to deadlines.

Develop a demonstration to explain a research topic.
Critical evaluation of current issues in schools and teaching.
Present material in a way to engage secondary school pupils.
Time management and lesson planning


Syllabus

We envisage that students taking this module:

- Will be placed within a local secondary school/6th form college with a specific remit to help organise Physics activities

- Will, during their time with pupils in school, organise Physics-based project(s) with the aim of promoting the excitement of Physics.

- Will consider the wider literature and issues facing Physics teaching.

The specifics for each student will be decided in consultation between the student, host school teacher and the academic module leader.

Resits will be assessed by the same methodology as the first attempt, although a repeat placement cannot be guaranteed. Students must submit a serious attempt at all assessments, in order to pass the module overall.
