Module summary

A tour of the physiology and basic psychology of taste, touch, smell, hearing, and vision. The psychophysical methods will be reviewed. How sound is coded in the cochlea and frequency analysis How light is coded in the retina and the stages of visual processing. Ways of studying vision. Coding in the visual cortex and colour vision. Higher-order visual perception: the capacity of visual attention, and the neurophysiology of visual attention and visual illusions. Multisensory integration and the importance for enhancing perception.

Objectives

This module aims to provide an overview of key concepts in perception.
The module will be taught by a team of experts in the subject.
Students will be introduced to a range of information within this discipline with particular emphasis on the research expertise of the module team.

Learning outcomes
The course aims to introduce students to the psychology of the Senses & Visual Perception, and the experimental approaches adopted by psychologists. By the end of the course students should be able to appreciate the physiological and psychological study of perceptions of touch, taste, smell, hearing and vision. They should also have an appreciation of the importance of multisensory integration.
By the end of the course students should be able to appreciate how we perceive a three-dimensional world. Students will also be able to show a basic understanding of all the senses and selected approaches to higher order perceptions such as motion and depth. The historical setting for current knowledge should be appreciated, and the experimental methods grasped.

Skills outcomes
Students will have the opportunity to consider how theory and research are integrated within the field of perception, and how theory and research are applied to real world contexts.
