Prior knowledge of Portuguese and successful completion of a 30 minute written test in Intro Week.

Module summary

This module is aimed at students with a prior knowledge of the Portuguese language. The module's objectives are to reinforce and develop grammatical knowledge and accuracy, both in spoken and written Portuguese, to perfect translation skills from and into Portuguese, and to develop the skills involved in aural and reading comprehension of the Portuguese language. The module is composed of two language classes per week, plus one hour of unsupervised grammatical consolidation and one hour of unsupervised audiovisual study. Students who are unsure if their level of Portuguese is sufficient to enroll on this module are invited to speak to tutors in advance. We welcome students with knowledge of continental and Brazilian Portuguese equally, and the timetable is arranged to suit the student cohort. This is a 20 credit module run in Semester 1. Students with no prior knowledge of Portuguese should consider SPPO1080 and SPPO1081: Portuguese Language for Beginners or SPPO1025 Beginners Portuguese. Those who do well in this module can, depending on their programme, apply to change to Joint Honours Portuguese in Level 2. Objectives

This module is aimed at students with a prior knowledge of the Portuguese language. The module’s objectives are to reinforced and developed their grammatical knowledge and accuracy, both in spoken and written Portuguese, and will have perfected translation skills from and into Portuguese and to develope the skills involved in aural and reading comprehension of the Portuguese language. Upon completion of this module, students will be able to express themselves fluently and accurately in both Portuguese and English.
In addition, the module aims to provide students with a general background knowledge of the history and cultures of the Portuguese speaking world.

3. The ability to extract and synthesise key information from written and spoken sources in Portuguese
4. The ability to organise and present ideas within the framework of a structured and reasonable argument
5. The ability to display knowledge of selected aspects of Lusophone culture and society

Syllabus

This module is composed of two language classes per week, which involve exercises in grammar revision, aural and reading comprehension, oral skills, translation from and into Portuguese.

The resit for any written component of this module will take the form of a 1 hour closed exam. The resit for any oral component will comprise a 10 minute oral exam.
