Module summary

This module will provide students with experience of SEM in practice, allowing them to apply the principles learned in the concurrent Functional Sports Anatomy and Clinical Assessment, and Musculoskeletal Medicine and Sports Injuries modules. This will provide hands-on practical experience of performing a range of duties at pitch side consistent with standards applied in a clinical setting. The content will include similar shared case-based discussions with the sports injuries module, including formative online material and face-to-face contact days. Topics covered will include history taking and assessment in SEM clinics, trauma and return to play at pitch side (students will be expected to complete an in-course pitch side medicine skills camp). Delivery will involve clinical experts in MSK treatment and pitch side trauma, with practical experience in exercise medicine. There are no exams for this module; assessment consists of pitch side attendance at one SEM clinic (detailing student log), a pitch-side case study, and a portfolio of evidence (e.g., CPD, conference attendance, pitch side case studies etc).

Objectives

The objectives are for students to:

- understand the medical requirements required at a sporting event and club both on competition days as well as out of competition;

- develop sufficient skills to enable effective practice;

- give advice around doping to athletes, and recognise the role of the SEM practitioner in the process;

- consider the ethical issues surrounding SEM practice.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to:

1) Employ knowledge and skills to manage common pitch side emergencies;

2) Describe the legislation relevant for sports and event cover;

3) Interpret a SCAT assessment and recognise its role in managing concussion;

4) Critique the management and treatment of common sporting injuries, and independently evaluate their implications for return to play;

5) Discuss the ethical issues and dilemma raised in sport, particularly for a health care professional;

6) Identify how record keeping and managing confidential records can be different from normal clinical practice and challenging in a sporting environment.

- Practical feedback on teaching days;

- One hands on placement in a SEM MSK clinic;

- In-house pitch-side medicine skills camp.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

A member of the academic or clinical teaching staff will be allocated as tutor to the group, and will meet with students regularly to assess progress, discuss issues arising, and set objectives for the next study period.

Clinical tutors will lead the practical sessions and will be available to answer any questions the students may have, and monitor progress (e.g. assess clinical competence in assessments).

The portfolio will be reviewed and discussed with the mentor or Course Director on a regular basis.

Each assessment is a compulsory pass element of the module. Failure to submit an item will result in a V code being appended to the final module mark. All elements must be passed in order to pass the module. Owing to the practical nature of placements, no resit will be available in September for students who fail the module; students will be required to repeat the module, as an internal candidate.”
