Module summary
The design and manufacture of healthcare materials and products is changing rapidly, stimulated by recent advances in digital technologies and vision of patient-personalised healthcare. This module introduces the field of healthcare materials and products focussing on contemporary polymer and fibrous materials and how they are used clinically and customised according to the specific healthcare application. With lectures supported by team work sessions, the module will provide students with the opportunity to further develop their critical and analytical abilities and communication skills. Objectives
Since students from different backgrounds could attend, the module will provide foundations in polymers, fibres, and biomedical engineering to better understand how specific material properties and design strategies can be applied to healthcare and to bring the students to a common level of understanding. The module content will ensure all students are sufficiently versed in polymer science and organic chemistry necessary for an advanced understanding of the range of healthcare materials, applications and product translation pathways encountered. This module then aims to provide the students with current knowledge of the field of contemporary healthcare products and materials manufacture such that upon completion the students would be able to carry out further research into the subject..Learning outcomes
1. Demonstrate a mastery of the range of polymers, fibres and bioengineering strategies used in the development of Healthcare Materials and Products
2. Demonstrate rational selection and critical thinking of polymers, fibres and textiles for use in healthcare research and industry
3. Develop a methodical understanding of medical textiles, biomedical textile, and manufacturing techniques required to develop medical devices and healthcare products.
4. Demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of materials interactions with the biological environment relevant to their application in healthcare.
5. Demonstrate awareness of regulatory frameworks in place for the translation of healthcare materials and products to the market.
Syllabus
The module introduces foundations in polymer science and textiles (synthetic and natural polymers, contemporary classes of healthcare materials and technological advances) that are critical for the development of healthcare materials and products. The module will equip students will specific knowledge on synthetic and manufacturing processes that are commonly used in the industry to realise healthcare materials and products. These topics will be underpinned by the introduction of bioengineering methodologies, with regards to the biocompatibility testing of material prototypes with cells, animals and humans. Ultimately, the module presents current translation pathways and regulatory requirements to enable the application of materials and product prototypes to human use.
