Module summary
This module will equip students with specialist knowledge and provide opportunities to develop insightful understanding of technical textiles, and nonwoven textiles. The method of characterisation, modelling and product design will be covered. The module will provide students opportunities to critically address the challenges in existing fibrous assemblies as well as design new structures for a range of consumer and industrial applications.Objectives
This module will provide specialist knowledge and insightful understanding of structure-property-performance relationships of a range of technical textiles and nonwovens. The module will equip students with the skills to design technical textile and nonwoven products for consumer and industrial applications.Learning outcomes
On completion of the module, the students should be able to:
1. demonstrate methodical understanding of underlying concepts and techniques available to manufacture and characterise a range of technical textiles;
2. demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of the principles and technologies for manufacturing and characterisation of nonwoven textiles
3. exhibit the mastery to apply specialist subject knowledge to critically and creatively evaluate current issues in technical and/or nonwoven textiles
4. employ specialist subject knowledge, analytical reasoning skills and problem solving skills to engineer suitable textile structures for specific functional applications
5. take an active role in working and to develop professional relationships with others
Syllabus
The students will be introduced to the classification and market sectors of technical textiles. The structure and properties of high performance and functional fibres will be introduced for a range of consumer and industrial applications. - The structure-property-performance relationships and modelling of technical textiles and nonwovens will also be covered. The contents will also include case studies for a range of end uses.

- 7 hours directed reading per lecture: 70 hours- 7 hours reading per practical class: 14 hours

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
As a part of the Group Project, the students will submit Literature Review (1500-1700 words in Week 18) through Minerva and will be given feedback by Week 21. This will scaffold the preparation of summative assessment which is 80%.Each student group and group project requirements will be set up in week 14; Project assignment, literature report and practical report will be set and their criteria will be explained in the first lecture of the module;
Each student group will submit a coursework proposal in week 15 and get feedback in the same week;
Each student group will use the two practical sessions to carry out testing either their ideas or their products, they will submit the testing report in the week 21; Student will have chance to ask questions on their coursework assignment after each lecture and in seminar.
