Module summary

Many of the most charismatic and ecologically important animals have a carnivorous lifestyle.Carnivores are represented in most animal groups, with extant species ranging from white sharks to African hunting dogs, and extinct species include famous examples such as T. rex.In this module you will discover the science behind our understanding of the biology of these exciting animals and learn about their relevance to the different areas of zoology, from physiology and behaviour to conservation and evolution.

Objectives

- To introduce students to the different aspects of zoology using carnivores as model species;
- To explore the science behind our understanding of carnivore biology;
- To develop an understanding of the scientific method, including the challenges and limitations that face scientific research with carnivores;
- To illustrate the way similar ecological problems are overcome in different species.

Learning outcomes
The module will develop students' ability to research and synthesise the primary scientific literature.

At the end of the modules students should have an understanding of the biology of a diversity of carnivores, including the challenges they face.


Syllabus

Between six and twelve carnivores will be examined over the course of the module.

In each case they will be used to illustrate particular areas of zoology, from physiology and behaviour to conservation and evolution.

Private study

- Each lecturer will introduce one or two animals.
- Substantial further reading will be required of the primary scientific literature to increase both the breadth and depth of student understanding of the animals.
- Students will be directed to appropriate scientific papers via the VLE and lectures.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

In-course MCQ will be provided mid-way through the course and will be formatively assessed. There will be a surgery session during each topic to assist students in locating and learning from the further reading.
