Students must:

1. Have passed level 2
2. Have secured a placement (or placements)
3. Attended pre-placement briefings and completed appropriate documentation
before they can be confirmed on the Work Placement Year

Objectives

The Work Placement module provides a structured and supported work experience which develops and enhances transferable skills and awareness of work place environments.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to demonstrate:
1. an understanding of a work environment, how it functions and their contribution to it;
2. an understanding of how to apply their work-based learning to other areas of personal development, including academic performance, and the ability to do so;
3. a high level of transferable skills including communication (written and oral), self-motivation, initiative, organisation and time management, objective setting, negotiating and team working;
4. an ability to reflect on experiences and identify their own strengths and areas for development


Syllabus

Students will undertake a minimum of nine months to a maximum of twelve months work placement/s. Each placement must be a minimum of three months. A maximum of 2 placements is permitted.

The placement/s will be agreed by the student, the School Work Placement Tutor and the Workplace Supervisor prior to the commencement of the placement, and will address the module objectives.

During the placement/s the student will produce a portfolio of tasks evaluating and evidencing their skills development. When they return to university they will give a visual presentation which will explore the skills and knowledge gained during the placement.

Private study

Total number of hours for the entire module (1200) will include:
- Pre-placement briefings and workshops
- Completing all necessary administration prior to placement
- Placement
- Site visit meeting with Work Placement Tutor
- Completing the portfolio of tasks
- Preparation and delivery of the visual presentation

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Pre-placement: students attend relevant presentations and meet with the School Work Placement Tutor, Student Education Service staff and/or the Personal Tutor as appropriate.

On-placement: students will have regular remote contact with a Work Placement Tutor and more regular support from the Workplace Supervisor. A Work Placement Tutor or their nominee will visit the workplace at least once during the first half of the placement (visits to overseas placements may not be possible and will be replaced with regular online conversations). The Personal Tutor will offer 'return to study' support towards the end of the placement year, usually alongside the programme leaders or DSE, and will be available remotely as necessary during the placement year.

Resit of the assessment task will be by repeat of the initial task, if necessary, alternative format of the presentation will be agreed in discussion between module leader, School academic placement lead and student.
