Normally Grade 8 ABRSM practical or equivalent (in lieu of pre-requisite modules)
AND/OR
Satisfactory performance in MUSS 1324 or MUSS1320

Module summary

This module is designed to develop conducting skills. Conducting technique and related performance skills are taught in small group lessons across the module. Attendance at concerts and discussions in class develop critical judgement skills. Assessment is in the form of a practical performance exam.

Objectives

The module aims to support the progressive deepening of musicianship - intellectual and emotional, development of conducting skills and technique, through the performance and rehearsal of repertoire. This is achieved through the development of critical skills in performance (of self and others), the development of knowledge that supports practical conducting, and related skills such as aural awareness, sight-reading, and organisational and planning skills for performance.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should:

1. Show understanding of conducting practice;
2. Demonstrate proficiency in specific conducting techniques covered in the module;
3. Display skills in critical musical judgement;
4. Demonstrate the application of communication skills in practical performance.

Syllabus

Students take a course of group conducting lessons with an experiences tutor, which are spread over the course of the module. There are normally opportunities for practice performances at key points in the module.

Preparation for group sessions: 11 x 5 hrs = 55 hrs

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

At the start of the module, students must normally complete a learning contract confirming that they are responsible for the organisation of their own ensembles for the exam recital. Failure to do so means that the students cannot take the module.
Continuous feedback on practical work is provided through group sessions across both semesters, and in plenary feedback at the end of Semester 1.
Students practice their performance skills in group sessions.

Date, time and nature of any resit is by mutual arrangement between examiner, venue and the student. An accompanist may be provided for resits (e.g. to play orchestral reduction, in place of an ensemble).
