Module summary

This module is designed to give you an overview of major cultural, political and social approaches to the study of media and communication. We will consider the contribution of selected approaches, and you are encouraged to pursue individual academic interests in relation to such approaches.

Objectives

The module aims to introduce students to some of the main theoretical approaches and historical and contemporary debates within communication and media studies. It will enable students to acquire an understanding of the role of theory in media and communication studies, and to provide them with the resources to build their own independent, critical perspectives on different theoretical approach.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module, you will be able to:
1) Identify and define key theoretical frameworks, issues and debates in media and communications
2) Critically evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of a range of theoretical approaches in the field of media and communications
3) Critically apply relevant theoretical approaches to research topics in the area of media and communication studies

1) analytical skills, enabling you to identify and examine the assumptions that underpin bodies of knowledge and research in academic or professional contexts
2) skills of critical evaluation and theoretical reflection that you can apply to the design of your own research in future academic and professional settings

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Monitoring takes place through classroom discussions, contributions in seminars and student presentations. Students will be encouraged to meet regularly with academic staff in office hours.
