Module summary

This module focuses on exploratory making and thinking and uses this to develop an independent body of creative work and a contextualised position statement. The module is divided into three sections 1) Positioning practice: students will establish the area in which their practice is situated using speculative research and consolidating their conceptual concerns. 2) Speculative enquiry: students will develop several creative projects that explore and test their line of enquiry. 3) Making meaning: students will select one of the speculative creative projects to develop, to confirm the viability within their developing practice.

Objectives

This module gives students the opportunity to develop a position statement and self-directed brief. This is developed out of practical and theoretical concerns explored in ‘Thinking and Making for Art and Design’
It allows them to identify and explore inventive methods and theoretical approaches as well as giving space to explore, experiment, and speculate critically on that practice
Students will also develop an understanding of generative processes and produce a resolved Art or Design output, reflecting on this in relation to its context.
Lectures will cover both inventive methods and key issues and themes in contemporary Art and Design. For example: environmental concerns, issues of diversity, underrepresented voices, speculative futures and how art and design can interpret the past. The practical sessions are where the individual’s creative practice can take place and develop in dialogue with the issues raised through the lecture programme, and in discussion with staff.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Develop a creative research approach and a position statement that forms a self-directed, independent brief or responds to and expands on a set brief.
2. Apply a range of inventive methods in response to the brief
3. Devise, situate, develop, and document a creative Art and Design project from conception to realisation

Skills Learning Outcomes:
4. Analyse this project through reflection and demonstrate how this reflective analysis will inform future work.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Feedback clinics each week will offer the chance of regular formative feedback. Formative feedback will also occur via a presentation which outlines context, concepts and methods and materials and acts as a position statement.

The opportunity for formative feedback and peer group learning via position statement presentations, will be key.  The opportunity to develop a resolved work and reflect on that critically in advance of the Final Major Project will be instrumental in the student’s creative practice.
