Module summary

This module is where synergies and differences between the Art and the various Design disciplines are introduced. It involves research, making, reading, critical reflection and technical skills. These activities develop understanding of art and design thinking, and offer opportunities to acquire new making skills, and to build a portfolio of short projects.

Objectives

This module gives students the opportunity to:

- Learn and understand a range of approaches to art and design thinking and making that can be applied to an individual creative practice

- Select and use appropriate approaches and techniques to support the development of creative projects that are both practice and research-focused.

- Acquire and improve key competencies including critical analysis and techniques necessary to be an interdisciplinary art and design practitioner.


This module will deliver a combination of lectures and studio practice sessions. Lectures will introduce students to contemporary approaches to and issues in thinking and making in Art and Design. Where possible, students will observe staff’s current research and creative work. Studio sessions will reflect what has been introduced during the lectures, thus offering a creative-critical approach to studio practice.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will have provided evidence of being able to:

1. Demonstrate an advanced understanding of the characteristics and differences between art and design thinking and evaluate their effectiveness for their own creative practice.

2. Analyse the relationship between thinking and making through creative practice projects

3. Express clearly the issues involved in being a critical creative-thinker and maker.

Skills Learning Outcomes:
4. Develop a range of visual research and analysis skills for practice.
