Post-beginners level of Japanese language equivalent to pass in EAST1220 (Basic Japanese Language 2)

Module summary

This module is for those who have taken Japanese A-level or equivalent. It aims to provide a solid foundation in Japanese grammar and further development of both spoken and written skills. Upper-elementary to intermediate grammar and vocabulary will be introduced and reinforced through conversation, extensive reading and translation practice.

Objectives

To continue Japanese language training, building on beginners’ level modules (or equivalent) to provide a solid grounding in Japanese grammar and further development of speaking and writing skills, alongside cultural awareness. The module aims to develop skills: in reading and writing kanji and gain proficiency in kana; in conversational Japanese using appropriate vocabulary and grammatical structures; and in reading and writing short texts with accuracy.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Read and write in hiragana and katakana; recognise and use essential kanji characters appropriately.
2. Engage in oral communication with increasing ease within structured or predictable situations, showcasing grammatical, phonological, and lexical accuracy. Exhibit awareness of situation-bound language constraints, including the use of honorific language.
3. Read and respond to texts on a variety of non-specialist subjects
4. Generate structured pieces of writing on selected topics, demonstrating grammatical accuracy and a broad vocabulary.

Skills Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
5. Clear and coherent expression of thought, both in written and oral Japanese
6. Effective adoption of proactive language learning strategies
