Module summary

This module will allow you to analyse examples of teaching and learning practices from across the world. You will be introduced to the idea of curriculum as a mixture of content, pedagogy and assessment practices. There will be a particular emphasis on research studies that examine the quality and adequacy of the learning experiences that children and young people encounter within specific international curriculum settings and the nature of educational outcomes that they achieve.

Objectives

The aim of this module is to introduce you to:

- Research-informed comparisons of teaching and learning across a range of contrasting countries and contexts.

- Rationales for different international approaches to education and the historical, political, social, cultural values manifested in the nature of the provision offered.

- Critical research evidence about the effects of different types of educational provision in different countries.

- The relationship between educational philosophies, pedagogy and practice.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:

1. Undertake independent and research-informed comparisons of teaching and learning across a range of contrasting countries and contexts.

2. Identify the rationale for different international approaches to education and the historical, political, social, cultural values manifested in the nature of the provision offered.

3. Critically review research evidence about the effects of different types of educational provision in different countries.

4. Explain the relationship between educational philosophies, pedagogy and practice.

In addition the specific assessment criteria for the assessment will be collaboratively considered, discussed and developed on an ongoing progressive basis throughout the module.

A comparative case study of two international education contexts: (Skill LO6) Case studies Choose two countries that you find interesting as the focus for your study. These may be countries that have been covered in the module, or others of your own choice. Conduct detailed research into the education systems of those countries (LO1). Each case study should draw on a range of evidence including academic literature, publicly available data, government documents and may also include first-hand accounts (LO1) Each case study should include curriculum, approaches to teaching and learning, the system (including examinations, phases of education, school types etc), relevant statistical information and social and political contexts in the focus country (LO1) Discussion In discussing the similarities and differences between the case studies, you should critically analyse the reasons for those similarities and differences, by referring to social and political values that influence education systems and approaches to teaching and learning (LO 2, LO 4) (Skill LO5). Demonstrate that you understand the value and reliability of different types of evidence that you have drawn on (LO3) (Skill LO5). 5.
