Module summary

This module addresses different communication skills required by a Qualified Teacher of the Deaf to meet the needs of deaf children, young people and their families. It provides the opportunity to develop and critically reflect on communication in a range of contexts.

Objectives

This module will provide the necessary knowledge and in particular the skills to meet the competencies required by the Mandatory Qualification of the Teacher of the Deaf

in the areas of:

Standard 2: Personal professional development

Standard 3: Working in Partnership with families

Standard 4: Communication and language development



This module comprises two components:

Individual communication skills to meet the needs of deaf children and young people

Individual communication skills to manage the sensitive interactions with families

In order to meet the needs of deaf children and young people, students will need to demonstrate a minimum standard of BSL and to be able to evaluate, monitor and support a deaf child or young person’s language development. This includes supporting and developing their interactions with a range of interlocutors and developing an understanding of the importance of language as a key component of cultural identity.

This module will support students to develop sensitive self-reflective communication skills to facilitate effective communication with parents and carers of deaf children and young people from diagnosis to early adulthood. This will include reflecting on the communication needs of the family and support required, such as interpreters, and how to manage these challenging interactions.

Learning outcomes
1. Have the knowledge and skills when working with deaf children, young people and their families to:

recognise their own perspectives and cultural understanding when establishing respectful and constructive relationships

work in partnership with families to understand and implement strategies to support the development of their child ensuring informed choice is central to the interaction

evaluate and reflect critically on their own contribution to sensitive interactions

2. Have the knowledge and skills, when interacting with deaf children and young people in a classroom teaching session, to reflect critically on their contribution to facilitate:

the different linguistic and communicative needs of individuals to support learning

the different language(s) development needs of the individual

communication and interaction between all interlocutors to support learning

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Student learning is monitored through the weekly on-line learning activities in the VLE, the 3 tutorial sessions and the study day practical and group activities.

Activities will include peer discussion and group work.
