Module summary

This module aims at in-service or pre-service English as a second/foreign language teachers and teacher educators who are interested in reviewing and developing their understanding of key issues in the learning and teaching second language vocabulary. In this module, you will examine the role of vocabulary in second/foreign language learning, teaching, and assessment, and critically discuss research-informed principles in these areas. You will have opportunities to apply the knowledge and skills you have developed in the module to effectively evaluate and improve the design of vocabulary learning materials, activities, assessment, and syllabi in your specific context of interest.

Objectives

The module aims to

1. enhance your awareness and understanding of
(a) recent developments in research on vocabulary studies
(b) their implications for second/foreign language vocabulary learning, teaching, and assessment

2. encourage you to
(a) reflect critically on these principles
(b )apply these principles to evaluate the effectiveness of vocabulary learning, teaching, and assessment in their specific context of interest and propose the areas that need improvement.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, you should be able to:

1. Demonstrate in-depth, specialist knowledge of key concepts, research methods, and recent developments in research on vocabulary studies, and their implications for second/foreign language vocabulary learning, teaching, and assessment.

2. Critically consider how these concepts, methods, and developments can be applied to evaluate the effectiveness of vocabulary learning, teaching, and assessment in a specific context

3. Creatively propose the areas that need improvement in that context.

On successful completion of the module, you will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:

1.Critical thinking: Gather and examine data and information from a range of reliable sources, utilising appropriate tools and technologies where appropriate

2.Creativity: Apply different frameworks to complex problems and develop viable, inclusive, and equitable solutions
