Module summary

This module will introduces you English-medium education (EME), a fast-spreading educational phenomenon. You will critically examine and assess the theories, ideologies and policies underlying the shift to EME in variedglobal contexts; examine approaches to supporting student learning through the medium of English from primary through tertiary levels; consider the social and ethical dimensions of EME, as well as evidence for its effectiveness; and gain a deeper understanding of the complexities of EME in one global context of interest.

Objectives

Upon successful completion of the module you will be able to:

1. Demonstrate awareness and understanding of the nature and impact of the spread of EME globally;

2. Distinguish between EME and other forms of English language education in bilingual/multilingual contexts;

3. Critically evaluate theories and ideologies which underpin policy, curriculum and practice in EME;

4. Identify, describe and evaluate different pedagogic approaches to EME as practised with different age groups and in different subject areas;

5. Read, evaluate and set in context the research literature on Present examples of high-quality research and enable students to reflect critically on EME.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module you will be able to:

1. Demonstrate awareness and understanding of the nature and impact of the spread of EME, and of the theories and ideologies that underpin it;

2. Articulate an understanding of how student learning can be supported in diverse EME contexts;

3. Identify and use relevant research literature to increase their understanding of EME;

4. Describe the implementation of EME in contrasting global/educational context and analyse its relative merits and limitations

Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module you will be able to:

1. critically consider theories, procedures and techniques of teaching and learning through the medium of English in relation to your own context;

2. investigate an area of EME using appropriate research methods and skills;

3. demonstrate independent learning and the ability to work in a way which ensures continuing professional development.
