Module summary

This module introduces students to the study of speech sounds. Phonetics studies their physical characteristics, while phonology studies how they are used by language users to create meaningful utterances. This module covers aspects of speech articulation and acoustics, as well as core concepts of phonological theory. Students gain practical skills in the recognition and description of speech sounds as found in the world’s spoken languages, and learn how to transcribe them using the International Phonetic Alphabet.

Objectives

This module aims to provide students with a solid grounding in the study of speech sounds. This includes introducing students to how speech sounds are produced and transmitted, and how they function in the sound systems of the world’s languages. It also includes training students in the recognition, transcription and phonological analysis of speech sounds.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. demonstrate an understanding how the human vocal tract produces speech sounds
2. demonstrate an understanding of how sounds differ in terms of their acoustic characteristics
3. demonstrate a command of core phonological concepts

Skills Learning Outcomes

On completion of the module students will be able to:
4. recognise and transcribe speech sounds as produced in familiar and unfamiliar languages
5. effectively communicate complex ideas in an academic style

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

The seminars provide a forum for supporting and monitoring students’ progress. Students are offered the option of completing a formative writing assignment on which they get written feedback, prior to the submission of their summatively assessed assignment.
