Module summary

In this module you will explore the history and culture of the English Renaissance and the changes in works, ideas and ways of thinking during this period. Integral to this module is support in the development of your academic skills, particularly with presentations and online time-limited assessments, as well as critical analysis and research.

Objectives

This module will give you an overview of the English Renaissance and the background of this period in terms of the European Renaissance and the medieval period in England. You will reflect on elements of culture, history, literature, politics, religion, art, etc., with a particular focus on cultural works in this period, and how they engage with their historical and social contexts. This module will particularly focus on the development of your confidence in research and academic skills.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Recognise different elements of the Renaissance period, including an overview of some of the key people, texts, events and concepts.
2. Analyse works in the light of the historical, social and cultural context in which they were produced as well as in terms of their style, structure, etc.
3. Communicate ideas about Renaissance history and culture accurately and clearly.
4. Assess and synthesise source materials to build arguments.

Skills Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
1. Presentation Skills: Research, plan and deliver an engaging presentation explaining your ideas and arguments about specific Renaissance figures and topics.
2. Information Searching: Use your judgement to find and assess information and research to analyse the works and contexts of the Renaissance period.
3. Self Confidence, Initiative, and Perserverance: Have confidence in your own ability to choose and select topics, sources and ideas about the Renaissance.
4. Critical Thinking: Carry out and demonstrate critical thinking and effectively communicate in both presentations and time-limited written pieces.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

There will be a practice developmental presentation, tutorials, and practice online time limited assessment opportunity to provide developmental feedback. This core module also supports learners to engage with foundation year programme-level opportunities to undertake tutorial support with tutors to reflect on applying summative feedback from semester 1. Formative feedback is also provided by tutors within workshop activities, interactive lecture discussions, and seminars.

Presentation re-sit will necessarily have to be an individual presentation, as students receive individual grades, despite gaining experience of group-work. Suggested time of 2 hours for OTLA. Suggested maximum word count 900 per question.
