Module summary

This module will provide an opportunity to independently explore your future degree topic as a foundation year student at the University of Leeds. In this module, you will consider transitions from interdisciplinary learning to preparing to study in a degree discipline within an extended degree. You will explore and discuss connections with your future degree subject. You will focus on getting started with considering current issues that apply to your interests by proactively investigating your chosen specialist subject.

Objectives

This module spans interdisciplinary foundation year learning and the transition to a degree discipline. It focuses on your journey towards a particular academic subject discipline or field of study. It considers concepts of academic disciplines at university and how undergraduate degree study enables independent investigation. The module focuses on critical thinking and supporting you to begin to find your place in a particular field of study. Key to this module are your theoretical and conceptual encounters with independently chosen topics, as well as active engagement with opportunities to interact with discipline areas here at Leeds.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Differentiate between interdisciplinary and discipline-specific modes of study.
2. Discuss contexts of discipline-specific study through analysis and evaluation of primary and secondary sources.
3. Independently investigate and critically assess contemporary issues in the Arts and Humanities through focus on a specific discipline.
4. Reflect on your own learning journey as a foundation year learner.

Skills Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
1. Critical Thinking: Form and reflect on subject-specific arguments and critical opinions based on your own awareness and discoveries within a case study specific to your subject.
2. Interdisciplinary and Disciplinary Literacies: Articulate your own aspirations through proactive engagement with contemporary ideas of your chosen subject discipline.
3. Developing Vision and Purpose: Develop and investigate your own independent research project guided by your self-directed subject specialist interests.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

There will be scheduled tutorials within the module offering formative feedback on the development of assessments. An outline plan opportunity will be offered for the subject exploration portfolio and tutor feedback provided. Assignment 1 while summative will also provide formative feedback which directly feeds into Assignment 2. Formative feedback is also provided by tutors within workshop activities, interactive lecture discussions, and seminars.
