Module summary

This module focuses on the management of digital business and the opportunities and challenges presented by advances in digital technology. Businesses and entrepreneurs are integrating new digital technologies into business models, processes and practices to exploit their benefits, but with this also follows challenges alongside changing capabilities. In this module, we focus on how digital technologies can create business value, transform existing work and explore strategies for overcoming challenges to thrive in this rapidly changing environment. Students will gain in-depth knowledge on technology-driven business transformations taught through real-life examples and the latest academic insight. Students will also develop relevant skills to navigate and use digital technologies for a range of business purposes, e.g., strategy, marketing and business model innovation.

Objectives

The module explores how businesses and entrepreneurs utilise digital technologies to enhance the performance and innovation of their business. It will provide students with an overview of the evolving digital landscape, enable them to critically assess digital transformation opportunities and challenges within different types of settings, as well as how to strategically manage these. Through this understanding, students will learn skills and techniques for managing in a digital age, and the consequences this will have on future business.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:
- Apply knowledge of the core concepts of digital business in different contexts
- Evaluate the importance of digital business for individuals, organisations and society
- Critically analyse the implications of digital business for different business sectors
- Critically evaluate barriers to the growth of digital business
- Apply knowledge of how to exploit digital business in a chosen organisation or business sector

Syllabus

Indicative content:
Digital transformation and digitalisation.
Digital technologies such as Social Media, Big Data, AI, Immersive Realities (AR/VR).
Business model innovation.
Co-creation.
Social media marketing, e.g., social media strategy, audience engagement and content development.
Critical issues in digital businesses e.g., privacy, surveillance and ethics.
