Module summary
The LCS Year Abroad is compulsory for all students on a degree programme with at least one language. In Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, and Thai it takes place between Levels 1 and 2 of the programme; in other languages it takes place between Levels 2 and 3. The choice of activities depends on the country of destination and whether the language is being taken ab initio or post-A level. Students taking the BA Modern Languages and combining any two of French, German, Italian, Portuguese or Spanish to degree level may be able to split the year abroad between two destinations.Objectives
LCS Year Abroad requires residence in the host country or countries for the equivalent of an academic year at Leeds and takes one of the following forms or a combination thereof, depending on the student’s language level and the country or countries of destination:— study placement at a partner institution
— a work placement
— a work placement as an English language Teaching Assistant
During this part of their degree programme, students will have the opportunity to:
- make substantial linguistic progress, over a wide range of registers, in respect of the target language by interacting with language users and engaging with the local cultures in the host country;
- develop the intercultural competence, planning and organisational skills, and the capability to adapt to a new social and cultural environment by living and studying or working in the host country
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the LCS Year Abroad, you will be able to

2. Demonstrate a nuanced understanding of the vocabulary, grammar and registers of the target language, with sensitivity to regional variation, and apply them in authentic communicative contexts
3. Relate general knowledge of the history, culture, and society of the countries where the target language is used to your lived experience
4. Experience, adapt to, and reflect on the social norms and cultural values that frame the societies where the target language is used
5. Engage with and respond to texts from the target culture conveyed in written and audio-visual formats (books, films, digital media content) in their source context

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Students will be supported by a named member of academic staff throughout the year. They will have three 20-minute individual or group tutorials with them (typically online, and in November, January and April). This will enable students to show their progress and discuss any issues. For students on a work placement, one of these meetings will involve a representative of the placement provider. The final supervision will incorporate, where required under the MODL9500 Learning Contract, the interview-style oral assessment in the target language.Methods of assessment

The MODL9500 Learning Contract frames the typical student experience on the Year Abroad and sets the requirements to pass the module. All students will be required to write a reflective report on their Year Abroad experience in the target language and pass an interview-style oral assessment in the target language. Each student will sign an individual Learning Contract, which will reflect different types of Year Abroad experience.. Resit opportunities for each component of assessment are available as specified in the MODL9500 Learning Contract.
