Module summary

The module will adopt an inter-disciplinary approach to the study of African development and will be particularly concerned to examine the interaction of economic and political factors, the role of domestic and international constraints, the relations between theory and policy and the contemporary debate about the future of African development. Considerable emphasis will be given to concrete case-study material in studying these features.

Objectives

This module aims to: (1) analyse the relations between the state, politics and development strategies in Africa since independence; (2) compare the different development paths pursued within Africa and contrast these with other patterns elsewhere in the developing world; (3) analyse the key structures and processes, both domestic and international, which have shaped the development agenda in Africa since independence; (4) evaluate and apply alternative theoretical models relevant to understanding and explaining the course of African development; and (5) assess competing contemporary prescriptions for the future development of Africa within the international system.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Analyse the relations between the state, politics and development strategies in Africa since independence and identify, discuss and explain the key structures and processes, both domestic and international, which have shaped the development agenda in Africa since independence.
2. Apply alternative theoretical models relevant to understanding and explaining the course of African development.
3. Assess competing contemporary prescriptions for the future development of Africa within the international system.

Skills learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
1. Evaluate and apply alternative theoretical models relevant to African development to wider socio-political contexts.
2. Communicate ideas accurately, effectively, and persuasively in writing.
