BA Spanish(For students entering from September 2024 onwards)

On this course, you will become highly competent in Spanish, one of the world’s most widely spoken languages while gaining a detailed understanding of culture and history – covering both Spain and Spanish-speaking countries across Africa and Latin America. You can also learn Portuguese or Catalan during your time at Leeds.
Each year, language modules will improve your spoken and written Spanish and optional modules will allow you to explore music, literature, cinema and history, as well as topics like race, ethnicity and nationalism. You will also be able to gain practical skills such as translation or specialised Spanish for business purposes, and develop your personal and intellectual independence.
You will take a compulsory year abroad that will allow you to practise your language skills and get first-hand experience of local culture(s) while gaining skills that make you highly attractive to employers.

Studying at Leeds means you will learn from world-leading experts in fields as diverse as Spanish popular music, translation, Venezuelan cinema, gender in the Spanish-speaking world, electronic art and writing, and nationalism and empire. Our teaching across modules therefore is a unique blend of language and content, and many of your modules will contain classes and/or assessment in Spanish. The programme is mainly assessed through coursework, offering students a wide range of creative assessments. Your Final Year Project will be an opportunity for you to work on a topic of your choice, under the close guidance of one of our expert lecturers.
By the end of your course, you will use Spanish at a professional level of language competence (up to C2 level in the CEFR) and you will have the knowledge, skills and intercultural awareness necessary to achieve your true potential and pursue a wide range of exciting global careers.
