The programme will:

Prepare future midwives to work in partnership with women and their families in order to deliver high quality, compassionate and evidence informed care during pregnancy and childbirth. We use the term woman here but recognise that not everybody identifies with this terminology.

Midwives understand that childbearing is an important life process, which will change the life of a woman and her family. A woman's childbearing experience is unique to her, her family and each midwife. It is essential that midwives are capable of acknowledging and responding to this uniqueness. This involves working in partnership with women and their families coupled with respecting the expertise of each woman. The programme aspires to develop future midwives who are able to work inclusively with all women, their families and others involved in care, responsive to their social and cultural backgrounds or abilities.

Twenty first century midwifery requires midwives to play a critical role in the provision and delivery of high quality, skilled, knowledgeable and compassionate care (NMC 2019, DH 2016) within the framework provided by the Code (NMC, 2018) and values of the NHS Constitution (2015). This blended programme is designed to be fully interactive and integrated where students can be immersed in learning whilst developing digital capability. Midwives continue to be experts in pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum care however as the demands and needs relating to health and healthcare are changing midwives need to be able to anticipate and prevent complications, recognising when enhanced maternal care is required. The programme has a focus on effective decision making and development of skills in a safe environment and digital technologies are used to enable greater access opportunities and immersion in learning for students.

Context of the programme
This programme is underpinned by the NMC (2019) Future Midwife standards that recognise the vital role that midwives play in leading and coordinating compassionate, evidence-based care.

An integrated curriculum allows for aspects of professional practice, applied practice, the cultural, biopsycho-social-spiritual model and evidence-based practice to be considered in order to address care in a holistic manner, whilst recognising the complexity of maternity care delivery.

Students will be expected to engage in their learning, develop curiosity and utilise critical thinking to provide high quality care. They will be supported to do this via a blended learning approach to curriculum delivery, utilising a range of technology, simulation, communication strategies and reflection.

The student journey through the programme starts by considering what it means to be midwife, exploring the knowledge, values and beliefs that each individual brings with them and recognising the impact that this has on care delivery. From an exploration of self, the student begins to consider working in partnership with others – women and families, as well as other professionals, recognising and understanding roles in care delivery. Utilising this understanding, students then begin to consider their role as colleague, scholar and leader whilst also recognising their role as educators and facilitators supporting not only other students and team members, but to empower women and their families towards optimal health and well-being. Students will develop an understanding of universal care for all women and newborn infants and their role in optimising normal physiological processes in promoting positive outcomes and preventing complications.

Students will be supported to recognise and understand inequalities in health and the effect that this has on access to services as well as considering ways to reduce these. This will include vulnerable and marginalised populations such as persons living with learning disability. The relationship between mental health and physical health and the impact of pre-existing conditions will be explored. Students will learn how to provide care and support to women and newborn infants requiring medical, obstetric, neonatal, mental health, social care and other services.

As students' progress through the programme, the complexity of care need increases in depth and scope, enabling students to demonstrate effective leadership and management skills to ensure continuity of high quality care. By the end of the programme students are equipped to provide autonomous care and promote optimal health and wellbeing for women, newborn infants and families, work effectively within a team, supervise others and be leaders of care.

Our midwifery programme is designed to prepare students to become a high calibre, sought after midwifery graduates. The programme contains 50% theory and 50% practice hours. Students will undertake placements within Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust and York District Hospital. This varied and excellent practice circuit enables students to experience care across the variety of clinical settings and enable them to work in partnership with women and their families to assess, plan, implement and evaluate individualised care. Utilising a combination of essays, presentations, MCQ’s, exams and a final dissertation all assessments require students to think critically and utilise the evidence base that underpins safe, high quality care.

Students and Service Users are central to the development, delivery and monitoring of our programmes and are considered part of the educational team. Students will therefore benefit from the lived experiences and perspectives of women and families with teaching led by them and joint assessment undertaken. The Leeds Maternity Voice Partnership and our students within current cohorts have supported construction of the curriculum and advised on admissions and selection process, module content, learning objects and the underpinning philosophy of the programme.

This programme supports the development of midwives who have the competence and confidence to think critically and deliver evidence-based care. It promotes the development of independent, life-long learners and encourages students to develop resilience and become role models for other professionals and the women and families they provide care to.
