The world market in translation is currently thought to be worth up to $15 billion, and is increasing by as much as 20%-25% a year. Furthermore, it is estimated that only 5%-10% of current world demand is met. This situation certainly augurs well for those planning a career as a translator. Experience has shown that students who have completed the MAATS programme have had no difficulty entering the profession; in other words, with the skills which they acquire at Leeds, graduates are well equipped for work in this fascinating and dynamic field.

In addition, the range of core and optional modules allows students to tailor the programme to their own interests and future career aspirations. They benefit from the diverse and innovative teaching methods employed. For example, the use of team translation projects in the Computer-Assisted Translation module allows them to gain experience of a range of roles in modern language services, beyond simply translating.

Finally, the electronic tools available at Leeds (translation memory tools, machine translation, subtitling software, corpora) represent an exceptional opportunity for students to acquire skills in high demand and short supply in today's translation and localisation industries.

Compulsory modules:

Candidates will be required to study the following compulsory modules

Optional modules:

Candidates will be required to study 15 credits from two of the following compulsory modules (one Specialised Translation A, or one Specialised Translation B in one language direction only and for which they have passed the entry-test).

Candidates usually choose one of these options in year 2, but may choose one of these options in year one with the agreement of the programme manager:

If candidates choose NOT to take MODL5301M or MODL5302M in year one, then they will be required to take 45 credits from the following baskets of optional modules. Candidates will be advised on appropriate choices of optional modules at the introductory meeting for all MAATS students.

Optional modules:

Candidates should usually have selected MODL5001M in year one. However, for candidates who did not complete the module in year one it must be selected in year two. Candidates must complete MODL5001M, MODL5210M, MODL5235M and MODL5245M over the course of their programme. For further advice contact the programme manager.

For those who did not select the full 30 credits of Specialised Translation modules in the same language pair and direction in year one, candidates will be required to pass a total of 30 credits from the following compulsory modules over the course of the programme. Students need to complete one Specialised Translation A and one Specialised Translation B in the same language pair and direction. Students can only enrol in the language pair and direction for which they have passed the corresponding entry-test.

Candidates should usually choose one of the following modules in year two.

Candidates will be required to pass 45 credits from the following modules to bring their total credits to 180 over the two years of the programme.

- Candidates may not select a module from this group that they have selected in another group.
- Not all modules will be available every year.
- With the permission of the programme manager, out of the 45 credits reserved for optional modules, students can dedicate 20 credits to the study of a language module at undergraduate level within the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies or the Language Centre. In this situation, students will be allowed to go 5 credits over the 180 credits limit.

Elective modules:

With the approval of the programme director, candidates may choose any remaining credits from elective modules offered within the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies, the Language Centre, or elsewhere in the University.
