Programme specification:
The programme will: provide students with a broad understanding of the varied role of communications in modern societies. The flexibility of the programme means students can prepare to pursue international careers or develop specialist knowledge in particular fields, such as film, political communications or the cultural industries more broadly. The MA Communications Studies consists of two core modules: ‘Media and Communications Theory’ addresses a range of theoretical approaches to the role of media and communications in the contemporary world. The module provides a thorough grounding in such key areas as Interpersonal Communication, Representation, Media and Power, Public Sphere, Political economy approaches to the media, De-westernizing Media and Communication Studies and Audiences. ‘Critical Issues in Media and Communications’ takes the theories encountered in the first core module and applies them to topical issues and examples in international communications, from a critical perspective.
The core modules help build the common base from which students can explore specialist areas through the dissertation and option modules, according to their particular interests and career aspirations. The Dissertation module includes weekly lectures on academic writing and research methods. Students are required to complete a dissertation of 12,000 to 15,000 words on a topic of their choice. The research is carried out under the guidance of an individual supervisor. Students also choose two optional modules from a large range of choices. The optional modules are research-led being informed by the research interests and practice of the academic staff in ICS (see current list of optional modules).
