Programme specification:
The programme will provide students with an intensive, multi-disciplinary learning experience (drawing on sociology, anthropology, psychology, media studies, education and elements of health studies, history and human geography). The focus will be on the new social studies of childhood and youth, and emphasis will be placed on working with students to develop a holistic perspective on childhood and youth. Unlike many other courses, the central focus will be on children and young people whole beings rather than on one aspect of their lives and/or the services and professions that cluster around them. The existing strength of the School of Education in inclusive education will remain but will be merged with this holistic perspective. Students will be encouraged to think of themselves as part of the self-conscious emergence of a multi-disciplinary field of study. Optional modules will give students the opportunity to develop theory and concepts in relation to specific topics and relate these to aspects of policy and professional practice. In addition students will complete a research methods module that specifically addresses doing research with children and young people (rather than a generic research methods module that leaves students themselves to make the link to childhood research). These points will be reflected in promotional material for the course, alongside information about the international reputations of the scholars and researchers who will teach on the course. In addition, attention will be drawn to the range of compulsory and optional modules will allow students from each of these key markets to construct their desired route through the course. The MA will be one part of a strategy to raise the profile of Leeds’s work on childhood and youth and the push to build an internationally recognised centre for research and scholarship.
