The MA Deaf Education QToD is a two-year programme that provides the Mandatory qualification of Teacher of the Deaf for England and Wales and accredited by the Department for Education. This blended programme provides opportunities to work online and face to face with peers and build a network of colleagues from across the UK allowing you flexibility to study alongside your work-based commitments. It includes two short residentials, which are included in the course fees. In addition to the mandatory qualification, this programme offers the opportunity to undertake a research-based project to build on the skills and knowledge acquired throughout the programme, through the dissertation module.

The School of Education has a national reputation both in teaching and research in the field of deaf education and draws students from all over England and Northern Ireland with a variety of experiences and knowledge, which you can also benefit from as part of our community. The programme is led by national and international leaders as well as senior practitioners in the field.

Approved by the Department for Education (DfE) to offer the Mandatory Qualification for Teachers of the Deaf, the programme integrates cutting-edge research knowledge with practitioner expertise to develop skilled, knowledgeable and critical practitioners. Dissertations will be supervised by experts in the field.

Our assessments are varied and designed to develop the skills you need in the field and updated in response to student feedback. From September 2023 assessed presentations may be delivered in BSL.

All University based sessions are supported by BSL interpreters and notetakers.

We welcome suitably qualified deaf and hearing applicants and provide appropriate access and
support arrangements for all students.

Bursaries are offered to UK Deaf Education schools or services funding more than one student per school or service in a single year.

Compulsory modules:

Students will begin to work on their dissertation in year one.

Optional modules:

Candidates must study EDUC5072M and EDUC5114M OR EDUC5070M and EDUC5113M in year one.

Year2 - View timetable

Compulsory modules:

Students will begin to work on their dissertation in year one.

Optional modules:

Students are required to select one 30 credit module and one 15 credit module in each year. Students are required to take the modules they have not studied in year one in year two.

If you studied EDUC5072M and EDUC5114M in year one, you are required to study EDUC5070M and EDUC5113M in year two.
If you studied EDUC5070M and EDUC5113M in year one, you are required to study EDUC5072M and EDUC5114M in year two.
