There are no relevant subject benchmarks for Advanced Clinical Practice. However in August 2019 QAA published a "characteristics statement" for apprenticeships in higher education. This says that apprenticeships incorporating higher education:
- are constituted as first and foremost a job which requires work-integrated learning. The workplace becomes a site for the development and generation of knowledge, understanding, skills and professional behaviours rather than just a site for their application.
- are designed to enable apprentices to develop professional / occupational competence within a defined occupation and apprenticeship pathway
- are based on occupational standards
- support inclusion and diversity in the workplace and should ensure that there are no unnecessary barriers to learning or assessment
- require the integration of on and off-the-job learning
- may require at least 20 per cent off-the-job learning and / or meet notional guided hours
- require the development of professional and / or occupational competence that is concerned with the ability to continually enhance professional practice to drive innovation, informed by codes of ethical practice and values.
- seek to maximise the transferability and recognition of apprenticeship outcomes to enhance career development opportunities for apprentices and deliver workforce development objectives for employers
- require comprehensive collaboration with employers at all stages
- position the employer as the primary gatekeeper for admissions working closely with the higher education provider
- involve tripartite agreements between employers, apprentices and higher education providers
- include support for apprentices in the workplace by a competent mentor and in their learning and assessment by a qualified trainer / educator / assessor who have sector experience and knowledge
- are not necessarily aligned with traditional academic years and may reflect varied patterns of employment
- may include a higher education qualification
- may include professional recognition.
This proposal addresses all of these characteristics.

Programme specification:

An Advanced Clinical Practitioner is able to manage defined episodes of clinical care independently from admission to discharge. This programme will produce Advanced Clinical Practitioners who have achieved all required competencies under the four pillars of Advanced Clinical Practice. They will;

- Show understanding and mastery of the identified skills
- Improve quality of health outcomes
- Demonstrate knowledge and skills in evaluation and research.
- Be able to develop self and others
- Show leadership and practice development
- Work across Professional and organisational boundaries
- Show innovation and change practice.

The programme will provide students with:
- Access to inter-professional learning.
- Access to a range of option modules, which will allow students to mould their programme of study to their own professional needs and the needs of the supporting organisation.
- A programme in which work based and work related learning is emphasised.
- Flexibility within the programme structure to maximise the opportunities provided by their personal case load within their work environment
- Assessment methods, which are linked to the students' practice and work requirements.

Candidates will be required to study the following compulsory modules, these can be taken in either Year 1 or Year 2 but the students must have completed them before undertaking HECS5324M and HECS5325M:

Optional modules:

Depending on student circumstances the number of credits studied in each year may vary.

By the end of the programme, students should have studied 105 credits from the folllowing optional modules.

Students must have completed 160 credits and have clinical manager sign off before they can take HECS5325M Advanced Clinical Practice End Point Assessment
