Relevant QAA Subject Benchmark Groups:
Subject benchmarks do not exist for bioscience or biotechnology Masters programmes. Although there are subject benchmarks for Business and Management, they lack specific applicability to the skills developed in this Masters programme, which are focused on entrepreneurship, enterprise, and new venture creation. Students are expected to demonstrate the characteristics embodied in the QAA Qualifications Frameworks level descriptors for Masters degrees ((https://www.qaa.ac.uk/docs/qaa/quality-code/master's-degree-characteristics-statement.pdf?sfvrsn=6ca2f981_10)
Programme specification:
The programme equips graduates with the knowledge, skills, experience, and personal attributes to successfully translate (or facilitate the translation of) biotechnology ideas developed at the laboratory bench into new commercial ventures or products of value to wider society.
Delivered jointly by the Faculty of Biological Sciences and the renowned Leeds University Business School (LUBS), this innovative programme fulfils a need for graduate-level courses that combine state-of-the-art, research-led tuition and learning opportunities in molecular biosciences and biotechnology with business, enterprise, venture launch and management skills that are essential for today’s entrepreneurial biotech and biopharma sector culture.
The programme combines three basic elements: 1) core taught modules in biotechnology and business enterprise, including commercialisation and intellectual property; 2) a choice of optional modules building on and extending this core; and 3) a choice of self-directed learning elements including a bioscience research project, with the option (subject to availability) of a business-style placement with an enterprise associated with Leeds University’s NEXUS external partnering function.
Throughout the programme, opportunities for networking with other Masters cohorts on programmes sharing common modules in both Biological Sciences and the Business School will be maximised.
At the end of the course, graduates will be equipped with the skills necessary to enter employment in a wide range of sectors including: business development, knowledge transfer, or intellectual property functions within biopharma/biotech industries (established or start-up) or in the university tech transfer sector. Alternatively, graduates of the programme may choose to conduct research at PhD level and subsequently to create their own new business ventures.
