Programme specification:
In addition to gaining a core understanding of materials science, the programme is designed to equip all graduates with a range of advanced skills in engineering materials, thereby enhancing their career prospects in the materials or metallurgical production industries as well as those industries where correct selection, specification and processing of materials is a key to success. The programme structure is designed to cater for entrants with a diverse range of science or engineering backgrounds. Upon graduation, students will be specialists in materials science and engineering, functional materials, metallurgy, and nanomaterials.
The MSc programme consists of a series of compulsory modules as well as a major research project, totalling 180 credits. The taught modules cover a range of fundamental and advanced topics together with current process technologies in materials science and engineering. There is the opportunity to specialise in a particular materials area through the research project module. The project accounts for one-third of the credits for the MSc programme and enables students to gain experience of planning, executing, and presenting a significant research project, gaining vital experience essential for an industrial or academic career.
