Programme specification:
The programme will appeal to graduates in life sciences and healthcare workers seeking career development in a profession allied to Medicine.
The new programme will meet the NHS requirement for workforce transformation and local demand.
It complies fully with the Department of Health’s approved curriculum and competency framework for Physician Associates (Competence and Curriculum Framework for the Physician Assistant, 2012 – the professional title was changed from Physician Assistant to Physician Associate in 2013).
The distinctiveness of our curriculum will be enhanced by embedding awareness and understanding of the Leeds “Core Programme Threads” relating to Ethics and Responsibility, Global and Cultural Insight, and Employability. Such that:
(i) The programme will enable students to be ethically self-aware and to exhibit professional attributes commensurate with practise as a Physician Associate
(ii) The programme will enable students to acknowledge and appreciate diversity and to engage with social, political, economic, legal, environmental, and technological perspectives appropriate to the NHS but also potentially transferrable to other Health Systems
(iii) The programme will enhance employability. This will be achieved by provision of evidence of transferable generic skills appropriate to the practice as a Physician Associate through an e portfolio and successful achievement of the learning outcomes demonstrated in success in internal exams. Role differentiation follows graduation and success in the national exam.
(iv) The profession is likely to be regulated
