Entry requirements:

A bachelor degree with a 2:1 (hons) in geoscience, civil engineering or a related science or mathematical discipline where relevant subject areas to engineering geology or geotechnical engineering have been studied. We would expect applicants to demonstrate strong engineering and maths knowledge.

A bachelor degree with a 2:2 (hons) will be considered for candidates with significant relevant experience.

English Language: IELTS 6.5 overall, with no less than 6.0 in any component (or equivalent)

School/Unit responsible for the parenting of students and programme:

School of Earth and Environment

Examination board through which the programme will be considered:

School of Earth and Environment – Post Graduate Examination Board

Relevant QAA Subject Benchmark Groups:

This is informed explicitly by the published Degree Apprentice Standard which outline 42 Knowledge, Skills and Behaviour descriptors which need to be satisfied by this programme. The programme is also aligned to the QAA Subject benchmark statement for Engineering (Oct 2019) and Earth Sciences, Environmental Sciences and Environmental Studies (2022).

Programme specification:

This programme will allow students to develop a broad range of knowledge in order to allow professional practice in any aspect of engineering geology or geotechnical engineering. The broad purpose of these occupations is to understand, model and analyse the ground in relation to natural and engineering processes. They specify and manage ground investigations (both desk studies and intrusive investigation) and create detailed ground models to analyse the response of the ground to loading for example, by man-made structures, engineering activities such as railway cuttings and natural processes such as erosion. They are required to manage and interact with a broad range of stakeholders (engineers, clients, asset owners, developers) from conceptual advice through to construction of ground engineering projects. They undertake and manage the specification and detailed design, including optioneering/value engineering of geotechnical structures and ground engineering solutions. They manage resources, budgets, sustainability and risk in relation to ground engineering projects. They manage teams and/or other professionals and aid other’s professional development.
The successful completion of the degree programme allows candidates with the appropriate first degree qualifications and after gaining the required professional experience, to seek professional accreditation for the award of Chartered Geologist from the Geological Society, or Chartered Engineer (CEng) from the Engineering Council through the Institute of Civil Engineers.

The strengths of the Integrated degree programme here in Leeds include:

- A learning experience within an environment of active research;
- A Strong emphasis on field and laboratory;
- Excellent collaboration with industry, locally, nationally and internationally;
- Site visits and field courses to demonstrate engineering geology in practice and develop additional field skills appropriate to the subject area;
- Extensive communication, employment-related and team skills development;
- Introduction to state-of-the-art analytical and numerical approaches used in rock and soil engineering.

For the award of MSc Geotechnical Engineering Degree Apprenticeship, students must achieve enough credits (120) over 24 months in the taught component to move on to the End Point Assessment project. Modules CIVE5160M, SOEE5070M and SOEE5531M will be undertaken in year 1 and SOEE5030 and SOEE5045 in year 2.

This programme is delivered as an on-campus programme with a mixture of lectures, seminars, laboratory and field work. Digital delivery, tools and assessment are used where appropriate and students will need to attend campus for a minimum of two full days (Monday and Tuesday in year 1 and Thursday and Friday in year 2) per teaching week of each semester. Field work and site visits sometimes take place on a Wednesday.
