Programme specification:

Following recent theoretical and policy developments in the general areas of disability, health and illness, this programme will provide students with a unique opportunity to study the various traditional and emergent intellectual and methodological stratagems available for analysing and investigating policies, practices, lay concepts and debates pertinent to scholars and professionals working, or planning a career, in the public or private sectors of the human service industries.

It introduces students to a range of analytical starting points, theoretical perspectives and associate research tools emanating from both the Disability Studies and Medical Sociology literature, and considers competing views on causation and the type of enquiries associated with particular positions, values and settings.

This general overview provides a firm basis upon which students can consider and critically evaluate specific disability and health related issues within the context of current welfare policies, practices and research.

Specific topics are highlighted for their relevance to an understanding of key conceptual issues and current and future developments in institutional and community based care and support for disabled people, and their families. Particular emphasis is placed on the changing nature of health care provision and practice and its impact on professional and lay experiences at the local, national and international levels.

The MA in Disability, Health and Illness draws on the expertise of scholars and researchers based in the internationally renowned Centre for Disability Studies in the School of Sociology and Social Policy and is the first post graduate programme in the UK to bring together in one unitary framework disability studies and medical sociology perspectives on disability, health and illness.
