Programme specification:

This specialised programme is the first of its kind in that it will bring professionals in deaf education from a range of international contexts together to work towards an MA using the University's new Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).

Although a number of individual European Countries and some areas of the USA have 'teacher of the deaf courses' there is not one international programme which meets the continuing development needs of professionals in deaf education. The School of Education is well placed to lead on this given the established deaf education expertise; the international links already established and the very successful precedent of other e-blended international programmes which provide a model for this programme.

It is designed primarily to meet the needs of educational professionals who are working within deaf education. This includes managers and teachers across the age range from the early years through to secondary age level. It is informed by expertise and research work within the School, international and national contacts together with in-house research supported by funding from agencies such as ESRC and Nuffield.

The programme is unique in its philosophy of deafness and inclusive approach which recognizes the value of sign language and the associated role of deaf adults in deaf children's education. It builds upon the available research and inspection evidence and offers professionals the opportunity to examine the models that are most appropriate for their context. In doing this it will build an international community of deaf education professionals with potential for further research and educational development.

This on-line distance programme is hosted on the University's Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) where the taught module sessions are combined with collaborative on-line tasks and discussion. Students will study part-time in their own country and engage with course tutors and fellow students via the VLE activities. Tutorial support and opportunities for group work are provided via the synchronous and asynchronous VLE discussion spaces.
