Programme specification:

The programme will:
- provide a structured and relevant course of professional and academic development for teachers at the start of their careers. It is intended that this programme will support and enhance early professional development, emphasising intellectual reflection and scholarship;
- be taught through a combination of Summer and day schools (including lectures, seminars and tutorials) and supported by distance learning materials with on-line tutor and fellow-student support;
- provide structured school-based learning, allowing students to draw from, and reflect upon their experiences as beginner teachers and to relate these practical insights to their reading and analysis of current theories and research relating to a range of issues in teaching and learning;
- introduce a range of classroom research tools that will be applied in the context of the module assignments. These skills will also provide an additional framework for professional reflection and evaluation;
- support the development of skilled and effective teachers;
- support the development of practitioner researchers of the future;
- enhance participants' career opportunities and prospects;
- provide a pathway to higher-level research degrees;
- be taught by research-active tutors and appropriately knowledgeable and skilled colleagues from partnership schools;
- be taught on a cohort basis, with each group of students sharing a common starting point with similar backgrounds, interests, aspirations and concerns. It is anticipated that student interaction and mutual support, during the demanding early years of teaching, will be both a feature and strength of the programme.
