Programme specification:
Following recent developments in disability and educational policy for children and students with special educational needs this programme will provide students with a unique opportunity to study the various theories and research methodologies available for analysing and investigating policies, practices, key concepts and debates pertinent to scholars and professionals working, or planning a career, in education and related services.
It introduces students to a range of epistemological positions, theoretical perspectives and research tools emanating from both the Disability Studies and Education literature, and considers competing views on educational policy and practice for disabled children and students, and the type of enquiries associated with particular positions, values and settings.
This general overview provides a firm foundation upon which students can consider and critically analyse specific disability and education issues within the context of educational policy, practice and research.
Particular topics are highlighted for their salience to an understanding of key conceptual issues and current and future developments in mainstream and special education systems. Particular emphasis is placed on the recent trend towards mainstreaming and 'inclusion' within schools and colleges of further and higher education at the local, national and international levels and their implications for professionals and practitioners.
The MA in Disability and Special Education draws on the expertise of scholars and researchers based in the internationally renowned Centre for Disability Studies in the School of Sociology and Social Policy and the School of Education.
