School of Mechanical Engineering

Relevant QAA Subject Benchmark Groups:

Accreditation will be sought from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).

Programme specification:

The programme will prepare students for a career as a mechanical engineer in the nuclear industry. As such graduates might be responsible for designing the next generation of nuclear power plant, be required to run a nuclear power station safely and productively, or you may be involved in fuel reprocessing, waste management, decommissioning of old nuclear power stations or radiological protection and safety. The programme is also well placed to provide the graduate with the foundations for a career in research and development. Careers in the general field of Mechanical Engineering are wide-ranging and employment prospects are excellent.

The first two years will focus on core mechanical engineering subjects, appropriate to any field of mechanical engineering. However, examples classes and design activities will have a distinct nuclear bias. In year 3 mechanical engineering subjects will be further extended to include modules specifically required by nuclear engineers. These will include material on nuclear fundamentals, reactor engineering and nuclear futures.

The large projects in level 3 will focus on nuclear applications.
