School of Process, Environmental and Materials Engineering
Relevant QAA Subject Benchmark Groups:
Engineering
Programme specification:
At the end of the programme students should be able to:
- understand basic and detailed engineering concepts relevant to the chemical and process engineering industries;
- use accurate standards of analysis and enquiry relevant to the industry;
- develop and evaluate engineering solutions to a range of basic and complex problems encountered within the industry;
- use a range of techniques to initiate and undertake the analysis of data and information relevant to the industry;
- demonstrate appropriate technical competencies relevant to the industry;
- use a range of acquired knowledge, abilities and personal skills in order to pursue a successful career in the chemical and process engineering industries.
The modular structure adopted in level 1 (including bridging modules in mathematics, physics and chemistry) allows students with a varied A-level background to become familiar with relevant underpinning science and engineering. Students will also be introduced to a range of transferable technical skills designed to enable them to analyse and communicate technical information and data during the course and in their later professional career, together with an introduction to design project working as a team.
Level 2 is designed to introduce more complex science and engineering concepts and includes individual and group project work as well as practical laboratory classes. Level 3 provides an appropriate standard of subject-specific material to enable BEng Honours graduates to pursue a successful career in the industry. Students also undertake a major group design project.
Level 4 builds upon the material in the previous year and introduces topics with a more research and innovation flavour, including a major individual research project linked to an industrial problem, so that MEng graduates are equipped for a successful career in a wide variety of areas within their chosen industry. Furthermore, the MEng is accredited by the IChemE for subsequent registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng) following a suitable period of post-graduation experience.
Students on the MEng programme are also eligible for the ICLP (International Corporate Leadership Programme) scheme run by the Keyworth Institute, which allows selected students to enhance their business and management knowledge by taking appropriate modules in levels 3 and 4, and summer placements at the end of years 2 and 3. MEng students are also eligible to study abroad or take an industrial placement for a period of one year.
