Programme specification:
For students who commenced study in the 2013-14 or later sessions, the following conditions will apply for progression to Years 2, 3 and 4:
- Students must obtain at least 100 credits and obtain a mark of at least 30% in any failed module.
- For progression to Year 4 of MEng programmes, students' performance over Years 2 and 3 must also meet the minimum requirement for a Lower Second (IIii) BEng classification.
Aims
- To help graduates develop the knowledge and understanding of engineering analysis and design that is required to become professional Electronic and Electrical Engineers and to equip them to undertake research and further learning in the field.
- To develop students' generic and transferrable skills in communication, management, leadership and business for a career in Engineering or other professions.
- To provide the educational requirements (in compliance with UK-SPEC) to permit progression to Chartered Membership of the Institution of Engineering and Technology and registration with ECUK as a Chartered Engineer.
Objectives
On completion of this programme, graduates will be able to:
- Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the underlying science and mathematics of electronic and electrical engineering, including an awareness of historical, current, and future developments and technologies.
- Apply an extensive range of mathematical and computer models to electronic and electrical engineering problems and show an appreciation of their limitations.
- Apply a knowledge and understanding of electronics, power systems and electric drives to engineering projects.
- Use fundamental knowledge to investigate new and emerging technologies.
- Apply a systems approach to electronic and electrical engineering problems, including unfamiliar ones, and develop solutions using analytical methods and computer tools as appropriate.
- Show competence in the use of modern software and hardware tools, materials, components and equipment for the design, construction and test of electronic circuits, control systems drives and electricity generation systems.
- Show knowledge and comprehensive understanding of design processes and methodologies and the ability to develop an innovative design.
- Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the commercial, economic and societal aspects of electronic and electrical engineering and understand the need for a high level of professional and ethical conduct in engineering.
- Show an awareness of the legal frameworks governing engineering, including governmental legislation, intellectual property and contractual issues.
- Show awareness of the environmental and sustainability, health and safety and risk assessment issues associated with electronic and electrical engineering.
- Understanding of appropriate codes of practice and industry standards including quality standards, and be familiar with dealing with technical uncertainty.
- Demonstrate the ability to use a wide range of technical literature and other information sources.
- Demonstrate proficiency in written and oral communication and work effectively with other people.
- Demonstrate an appreciation of the nature and importance of academic research in the field.
Distinctive Features
The programme combines a strong research-led curriculum with a practical project in every year of study.
In years one and two, students study a broad range of underpinning electronic and electrical engineering subjects, from power generation to device technology.
In Year 3, students have compulsory modules that cover the core themes of electrical and control engineering at a high level, including Electric Drives, Embedded Systems, Electromagnetism and Control Systems & Design. Having covered the core themes, students have substantial freedom to specialise in their particular favourite field of Electronic and Electrical Engineering. Students conduct a substantial Individual Project in their chosen topic.
In the Final Year, students have compulsory a dvanced modules in Power Electronics & Drives and in Control Systems. Students conduct a Group Design Project, contributing to the electronic or electrical engineering aspects of the project.
