School of Chemical and Process Engineering

Examination board through which the programme will be considered:

School of Chemical and Process Engineering

Relevant QAA Subject Benchmark Groups:

Chemistry, Physics, Electronic Engineering, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Materials Science

Programme specification:

The programme will:
- provide a high quality broad based science background covering chemistry, physics, electronic engineering, biophysics and materials science with an underlying leitmotif of nanotechnology;
- train students in practical and theoretical aspects of nanotechnology for suitable employment in the newly emerging nanotechnology industries;
- bring students to an academic level so that they will be able to engage in research scholarship in any field of science connected with nanotechnology in industry, government research laboratories or academic institutions;
- develop a student's problem solving ability in particular relating to science at the nanoscale;
- provide students with a broad appreciation of science as a whole and the necessary background and intellectual training for a wide range of careers;
- give students an appreciation of the social, ethical and environmental issues associated with the rapidly developing area of nanotechnology;
- train students to work across several scientific disciplines and therefore to think laterally when applying themselves to problems in nanotechnology;
- enable students to develop to the highest professional levels as scientists.

Relationship with other programmes:

Two thirds of the BSc nanotechnology programme is made up of existing modules in chemistry, physics, electronic engineering, biochemistry and materials science. This broad combination of modules will continue throughout the three years of the degree and is evenly spread. One third of the degree will consist of custom-designed modules dealing specifically with practical and theoretical aspects of nanotechnology.
