Entry requirements:

A good second class Honours degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate engineering, science or mathematical subject. Appropriate industrial experience at a professional level will also be considered.

At the end of the programme students should be able to:
- Demonstrate in-depth, specialist knowledge and mastery of techniques relevant to the areas of fire and explosion engineering necessary for buildings and process plant
- Demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of, and an ability to critically analyse, concepts, information and techniques at the forefront of fire and explosion engineering
- Contribute to the formulation of appropriate fire and explosion prevention and mitigation strategies and the design of suitable protection systems
- Exhibit mastery in the exercise of generic and subject-specific intellectual abilities
- Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of techniques applicable to their own research
- Take a proactive and self-reflective role in working and develop professional relationships with others
- Formulate ideas and hypotheses and to develop, implement and execute plans to evaluate these
- Evaluate current issues, research and advanced scholarship in fire and explosion engineering

Human and financial losses resulting from fires and explosions occurring in buildings and process plant can be devastating. A complex and fast-changing legislative framework and a move towards performance-based standards require a fundamental science/engineering-based approach to fire and explosion protection design. This programme, one of only a few in the UK HE sector, is designed to equip graduates with relevant skills at an advanced level, thereby enhancing their career prospects in this sector of industry. As well as catering for full-time students, the programme is also available in part-time mode.

The MSc programme consists of a number of compulsory and optional modules including two major projects, totalling 180 credits.

The taught modules cover a range of advanced topics and current technologies relevant to fire and explosion engineering, with most being taught as intensive one-week courses (with one module delivered by e-learning). There is also the opportunity to satisfy particular interests through the research project topic. This project accounts for one-third of the credits/marks for the MSc programme and enables students to gain experience of planning, executing and reporting on work of the type they will undertake in an industrial or academic environment.

The course is accredited by the Energy Institute (EI) and satisfies the requirements of further learning for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.
