Desired
(4) Mathematics to the equivalent of a B or higher in a UK A-Level
The application process will be administered by the University of Leeds
School/Unit responsible for the parenting of students and programme:
School of Earth and Environment
Examination board through which the programme will be considered:
The examination board responsible for the programme will be the existing School of Earth and Environment Examination board for MSC-SGEOL/GP. Appointment of subsequent external examiners will be the responsibility of the Programme Management Board.
Programme specification:
The programme provides a fully integrated approach to the hydrocarbon system and delivers an Exploration Geoscience course that is distinct from any other course globally. It features one year study at the University of Leeds and a second year at Jacobs University, Bremen with a qualification jointly awarded by both institutions.
The first year focuses on theory and methods used to develop geological models. It will comprise modules from the existing MSc Structural Geology with Geophysics and include Seismic Interpretation, Geophysical methods, 3D Structural Visualisation and modelling, sequence stratigraphy, petrophysics and reservoir structural geology.
Year two will consider how geological models are used as the input for petroleum system modelling. This will include theory and application of organic geochemistry, sedimentology, petroleum system modelling and will integrate the AAPG’s Imperial Barrel Award.
The schedule will be:
Year 1 Semesters 1 and 2 (October – April). Take 120 credits (equivalent to 60 ECTS at Jacobs University) taught-course modules at University of Leeds following MSc Structural Geology with Geophysics.
Year 1 (May – September). For students that are being sponsored by companies this will be an opportunity for the students to return to their host company. Other students will be encouraged to undertake summer internships through company links.
Year 2 Semesters 3 and 4 (September to May). Take 120 credits credits (equivalent to 60 ECTS at Jacobs University) of taught-course modules at Jacobs University.
Year 2 Semester 5 (May to August). Students undertake a 60 credit independent project that could be based in either University of Leeds or Jacobs.
Fieldwork will form an essential component of the course and will include:
• assessment of compressional and extensional tectonics - South West England (6 days);
• implications of orogenic deformation on hydrocarbon systems - Spanish Pyrenees (12 days);
• petroleum Systems fieldwork Excursion I (Harz - 1 week);
• petroleum Systems fieldwork - Excursion II (Helgoland / Piesberg / Ardenne - 2 days + 3 days);
• fault analysis and deformation bands - NE England (1 day);
Opportunity to gain additional skills through Jacobs skills development module, topics include:
- Language Courses (German etc)
- Resource Geology (ore deposits)
- Stable Isotopes
- Radiogenic isotopes
- Geostatistics
- Programming in Python/IDL/Matlab
Two additional components will be included within the programme to ensure a distinct course.
Imperial Barrel Award – this is run by the American Association of Petroleum Geologist, which is the leading international professional body for the hydrocarbons industry. This award is an exploration competition that provides students with a realistic exploration exercise at the same time as giving them the opportunity to compete with other universities at both a European and international levels.
Jacobs Basin Dynamics Hydrocarbon Conference – This is a week long series of talks and workshops delivered by renowned experts from industry and academia who share their experience and insights into the industry. Half-day presentations will be mixed with (panel) discussions and exercises. This is the participants’ access route to highly specialised expertise in modelling as well as knowledge, hints and experience from around the globe.
